Seckman Middle School is helping families in the community this holiday season by donating food baskets to families in need as well as to the Arnold Food Pantry. In November, each advisory adopted a family and started collecting holiday food, as well as monetary donations to fill a basket for their adopted family. In addition to the advisory challenge, students also brought in canned goods and donations to vote on the 7th and 8th grade candidates running for court. SMS collected a total of around $900 and numerous canned goods from both activities. Once everything is purchased for the food baskets, all extra money and food items will be donated to the Arnold Food Pantry located on Richardson Road. Twenty two families were adopted by SMS and the baskets will be delivered before the holiday break, December 21st.

JagCast
Jagcast is a new and popular newscast that is unique to Seckman Middle School. Each day the Jagcast presents the daily announcements, weather forecast and may also entertain with jokes, riddles, trivia, etc. Also this has been a wonderful avenue for kids to show their dramatic skills to the school with short skits and the creation of commercials to try and promote school events.
The Jagcast is shown to all students during the 5th
hour class via video. Students are in charge of creating how information is presented.
Select students have also been trained to create the entire cast with a catchy
introduction, addition of music, and credits at the end.
Jagcast has been a great addition to SMS and helps to
disseminate information in a creative, interesting way! The Jagcast ends their
presentation each day by repeating the SMS specialized acronym LEAP: Take the
leap Jags! Learning Excellence Achieving
Pride!
Here's a sample Jagcast.

Archery Club
The 2012 SMS Archery Club has begun. The club is based on the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) and is open to all students that wish to participate. We began by going over rules, regulations, course set-up, and techniques. At our first meeting, we had nearly 50 eager students show up. We shot with the high school so our students could learn from other experienced archers. They were a great help and we look forward to competing alongside them at our upcoming tournaments.
Practices are currently on Thursdays or Fridays, depending on gym availability. Archery Team tryouts will be held at our practice on February 1st.
Our first tournament will be at Seckman High School on March 3rd. After that, we will head to the Missouri State Competition on March 23rd in Warrensburg, MO.
We expect a great year since many of our archers have experience from elementary school and have competed previously.
If anyone has any questions, please contact our coaches, Mr. Reed or Mr. Sattley.
The National Archery in the Schools Program promotes international-style target archery as part of the in-school curriculum, to improve educational performance and participation in the shooting sports among students in grades 4-12.

Green Machine
Green Machine is an after school club that meets twice a month and monitors Rock Creek behind the school. We are an officially recognized Missouri Stream Team and we are supported by the Missouri Department of Conservation with equipment and training. Anyone can sign up and we do frequent litter clean ups around campus and up and down the creek bed. We also monitor the creek organisms and macro invertebrate, which gives a good indicator of water quality. Ms. Lindhurst is the club sponsor. For more information email Ms. Lindhurst or stop by Room 20 at SMS.

Veterans Breakfast 2012
Seckman Middle School
and Seckman High School came together this year to
honor the veteran’s and heroes within the community. Both schools hosted
a veterans’/ heroes breakfast at SMS on Friday, November 9th.
Many organizations, students, teachers, and community volunteers worked
together to make the ceremony a huge success. The community Brownie Troop
decorated the guest speaker table with a home made table skirt and table
decorations. Various clubs and organizations at SHS decorated the gym with
posters and SMS students decked out the halls with patriotic themed artwork,
crafts, and decorations.
The ceremony included a catered breakfast from South County
Cracker Barrel, special musical selections from SMS and SHS choirs, SMS and SHS
band performances, three guest speakers including Mr. Walter Crawford from the
World Bird Sanctuary, Al Cochren from Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, and
Matt Lary, author of Victory
Through Valor. All guests that attended the ceremony were recognized
with a Hero certificate, goodie bag, a metal of thanks pin, and a thank you
card placemat. The spouses were also recognized during the ceremony in honor of
their support. Taps was played by a SHS student, guests watched a video showing
the SMS student body reciting the Preamble, and the ceremony was concluded with
the Walk of Honor. Students and staff lined the halls thanking the guests
for keeping America
free. Through the combined efforts of SMS, SHS, and members in the community,
the 6th annual Veterans/Hero breakfast proudly recognized the men
and women that serve(d) our country.
