Archery - World Tournament

This year's NASP World Archery Tournament was held here at home in St. Louis at the Edward Jones Dome.  This tournament was nearly a month and a half after school ended.  The kids practiced twice a week for a couple hours each day to stay in practice.  It paid off!!  SMS Archery became the 35th best Middle School in the World.  We're very proud of these kids and what they have accomplished.  We will miss the 8th graders next year as they move on to the high school.  Hopefully they will continue their archery success with the high school team.  We wish them the best of luck.  Thank you to the following 8th graders who helped make our first year in Archery such a huge success:  Richie F, Tyler W, Lexi H, Caleb W, Emily B, Kristen B, Leah A, Kaci R, Katie S, Alex L, and Austin Y.

The Eggs Prize 2013

Seckman Middle School 7th grade science classes are participating in The Eggs Prize again this school year. The Eggs Prize is a contest modeled after the X Prize (which was a cash prize of 10 million dollars awarded to the first private team to build a space vehicle traveling to an altitude of 62 miles with 3 passengers and return them to Earth safely). The Eggs Prize requires students to build and launch a water bottle rocket carrying a raw egg as a payload to an altitude of 30 meters, returning the egg unharmed to Earth. Students worked in teams to build their rockets and then launched them this past week at school!

Recyclable Racers

Seventh grade science classes build Recyclable Racers every spring to test the laws of physics and experiment with gravity and motion.  Students are asked to build small cars that are gravity powered to race on a ramp. The fastest car built is rewarded!  A perfect balance between design and mass must be struck to win the race.  Here are some photos of some of this year’s designs:

St. Jude Children's Research Hospital Fundraiser

Each year, the SMS Math department, led by Mr. Martin, does a fundraiser for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.  This year was our best ever fundraiser.  Seckman Middle was able to send a check to St. Jude for
$4038.20!!

The fundraiser was done by working a night at the Culver's Restaurant in Arnold, donations, and holding a Penny War between advisories.  This years Penny War winner was Mr. Perry's advisory.  Their reward was going to all three lunch periods.  Way to go!

Archery - State Tournament

The SMS Archery Team competed in the Missouri State Tournament last Saturday.  This was the first major tournament for many of the archers and they did great.  Our team ended up with a score of 3070 out of a possible 3600.  This is a huge improvement  from the St. Louis tournament and helped us to a 10th place overall finish.  Richie Freuks placed 5th in the state for the Boys Middle School division with a score of 284/300.  Brittney Hudson scored a perfect 50 on her opening round!!  That was our first perfect score and she did it in a tournament.  Great job and congratulations to all the archers.  Our score also qualified us to go to Nationals in Louisville, KY in May.

This is half the team.  One half shot at 5pm and the other half at 6pm.  All while a blizzard was coating the streets outside.

This years State Tournament was at the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg.

Some of the girls went up to accept the trophy on Richie's behalf.  A few families headed home before the snow storm got bad.
